Retirement Planning

Turning pensions, investments and savings into a plan for the life you want

Retirement Planning

Retirement is not simply a date or a pension calculation. It is a transition from earning and accumulating wealth to using that wealth to support your life.

You may have several pensions, investments, savings, property or business interests, but still be unsure whether they are enough. You may also be uncertain about when to retire, how much you can spend or which assets to use first.

We help you turn those separate arrangements into a coordinated retirement plan.

Planning your retirement with Wingate

Can I afford to retire?

This is often the first question, but it usually leads to several others:

  • What will retirement actually cost?
  • Could I retire earlier than planned?
  • Should I stop work completely or reduce my hours?
  • How much income can I draw without taking too much risk?
  • Which pensions and investments should I use first?
  • Should I take tax-free cash?
  • What happens if markets fall early in retirement?
  • Can I afford to help my children or grandchildren?
  • How might care costs or living longer affect the plan?

We use lifetime cashflow planning to compare your expected expenditure with your pensions, investments and other resources.

We can model different retirement dates, spending levels and investment outcomes. This helps you understand what may be possible, where there is flexibility and which decisions could have the greatest effect.

Creating a sustainable retirement income

Retirement income may come from several sources, including:

  • State Pension and workplace pensions;
  • personal pensions and income drawdown;
  • annuities;
  • ISAs and other investments;
  • cash savings;
  • property or rental income; and
  • business assets or sale proceeds.

The right approach will depend on your objectives, tax position, need for flexibility and willingness to accept investment risk.

We consider how these resources work together rather than looking at each arrangement in isolation. This may include deciding which assets to draw from, how much cash to retain and how to manage income tax and capital gains tax over time.

Managing risk throughout retirement

A retirement plan may need to last for several decades. During that period, investment returns, inflation, spending and family circumstances may all differ from the original assumptions.

We test the plan against less favourable outcomes and consider the effect of:

  • poor investment returns;
  • high inflation;
  • spending more than expected;
  • living longer;
  • helping family members;
  • losing a spouse or partner; and
  • needing care later in life.

This does not remove uncertainty, but it helps us build a plan with suitable flexibility and identify when changes may be required.

Retirement is not a one-off event

Your needs are likely to change during retirement. Spending may be higher during the early years, change as life becomes quieter and rise again if additional support or care is needed.

Regular reviews allow us to update your cashflow plan, monitor your investments and adjust the income strategy when your circumstances or the wider environment change.
