Investment and Wealth Management

Investment and Wealth Management
Investing is not simply about selecting funds or trying to identify which market will perform best next.
Your investments should have a clear purpose. They may be intended to support your retirement, produce an income, meet future expenditure, provide financial security or pass wealth to the next generation.
We begin by understanding that purpose and the role each investment needs to perform within your wider financial plan.
Investment management with a clear purpose

Building an appropriate investment strategy
Before recommending an investment strategy, we consider:
- your objectives and time horizon;
- how much access you may need to your money;
- your attitude to investment risk;
- your capacity to withstand losses;
- the return needed to support your plan;
- your tax position;
- existing investments and capital gains; and
- any preferences concerning responsible investment.
The amount of risk you are comfortable taking is not necessarily the amount you need or can afford to take. Our role is to bring these considerations together and explain the implications clearly.

Diversified investment portfolios
Diversification reduces reliance on any single company, market, country or investment style.
Our portfolios invest across a broad range of global assets and may include equities, fixed interest investments, property and cash. The precise allocation will depend on the portfolio’s objectives and level of risk.
We provide both active and passive investment approaches. The right choice will depend on the role of the portfolio, the degree of active management required and the importance placed on cost.
Discretionary investment management
Wingate is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority to manage investments on a discretionary basis.
This allows us to make agreed changes to a portfolio without seeking separate consent for every transaction. It can help us respond more efficiently when investments need to be replaced, portfolios rebalanced or changes made to the underlying strategy.
Our investment decisions are governed by a documented process and subject to regular oversight and review.
Keeping costs and tax in view
Charges reduce the return received by an investor, so cost is considered throughout our investment process.
We also consider the appropriate use of pensions, ISAs, investment bonds, general investment accounts and other structures. Tax treatment should support the financial plan, although it should not be the sole reason for choosing an investment.
Where existing investments have substantial gains or valuable features, we consider whether changes should be made immediately or managed gradually.

Ongoing management and review
Investment markets will rise and fall, and different assets will perform well at different times.
We monitor portfolios, rebalance them when appropriate and review whether they remain aligned with their agreed objectives and risk parameters. Your adviser also reviews whether the overall strategy continues to support your financial plan.
The value of investments can fall as well as rise, and you may get back less than you invest.
